This sweet sachet will add a pleasant scent to your dresser drawers, closet, suitcase, storage boxes, and even your fabric stash! You could even hang it up in a prominent place to enjoy the scent and add beauty to most any space. Our sachet is trimmed with a pretty lace motif and basic craft pearls applied using the Pearl and Sequins foot,
our Brother Foot of the Month. This foot has a groove on the bottom that glides over a string of pearls. Have fun making several of these to keep or to give as gifts.

Materials and Supplies

• Brother Sewing and Embroidery Machine
  with 4-inch hoop size.
• Brother polyester embroidery thread
  for embroidery.
• SA150
  Pearls and Sequins foot.
• SA540
  Brother lightweight water-soluble stabilizer.
• Lace embroidery motif for trim on front of sachet. Featured lace motif, No. 200810234
  is available for purchase on iBroidery,
  the Brother design download site.
• Embroidery needle for embroidering lace motif.
• Basic sewing notions, including thread to match fabric, an erasable marker, and a press cloth for pressing over netting.
• Potpourri or dried herbs such as lavender for filling sachet.

Fabric for sachet:

• Linen, linen blend, or cotton, one piece measuring 6-inches wide X 7-inches long for front of sachet.
• Fine netting or bridal tulle, two pieces measuring 8- inches square for embroidering lace motif, and two pieces measuring 6-inches wide X 7-inches long for back of sachet.

Trim:

• 13-inches of ½ to 1-inch wide lace trim for top of sachet.
• 16-inches of ¼-inch wide satin ribbon for tie at top of sachet.
• 8-inches of ¼-inch wide satin ribbon for loop at top of sachet.
• 4mm craft pearls for trimming sides and bottom of sachet.

Instructions for Creating Sachet

1. Download lace motif and transfer to machine. See design image in Figure #1.

2. Wind bobbin with embroidery thread to match upper thread. Thread top and bottom with same thread and embroider motif using a single color. See Figure #3.

3. Trim stabilizer close to scalloped edge of motif.

4. Wash out stabilizer, let dry, and press with press cloth.
5. Position motif on front piece. See below:

6. Stitch around inner oval of motif using a zigzag set for a width and length of 2.0. See Figure #5.

7. Turn to wrong side and carefully trim fabric from oval, trimming through just the fabric layer. See Figure #6.

8. Layer front and back pieces together with two layers of netting on top. Curve bottom edge on each side using a small round object and pin layers together. See Figure #7.

9. Sew around sides and bottom using a ½-inch seam allowance. Trim seam to a scant ¼-inch. Overcast using a triple zigzag stitch, width 3.5, Length 3.0. See Figure #8.

10. Turn right side out and press lightly. Beginning at the center back, sew lace trim to top edge using the triple zigzag, with lace overlapping raw edge of fabric. Trim away fabric close to lace stitching. See Figure #9a and #9b.

11. Attach Pearl and Sequin foot to machine and select a standard zigzag set for a width of 6.0 and a length of 4.0. Feed pearls under foot with approximately 1-inch of pearl string extended behind foot. To help start the stitching, place a small piece of water-soluble stabilizer at the top side edge, and then align sachet so pearls run right along the edge. Begin stitching at the top, tying off the stitch when it bites into the lace edging. See below:

Continue stitching, attaching pearls along edge and finishing at the opposite side with pearls extending slightly beyond the edge. Zigzag stitch will slip over the pearls and catch the edge of the fabric, leaving pearls so they look like they are floating along the edge. Tie off stitch as you did at the beginning.

12. Trim excess pearls close to top. Make a loop with the smallest piece of ribbon and then center longer piece on top. Center ribbons on the back, approximately 2-inches from the top edge and then sew in place with a triple zigzag stitch. See Figure #10.

13. Fill sachet and tie closed. You are finished!

Options and ideas:

• Create a small pouch from netting to contain the filling for the sachet, making it easy to add fresh when necessary.
• Customize the sachet with a small monogram.
• Add decorative stitches to front piece before sewing front and back together.
• Fill sachets with natural cedar or other herb mixtures known for repelling moths and add to storage of woolens and wool fabrics.
